Montessori Peaks Academy History
MPA was founded as a Jefferson County Public Charter School in 1997. The school was the idea of a small group of parents who envisioned the Montessori methodology as an educational choice within the public schools. As a charter school under contract with the Jefferson County School District R-1, MPA follows all of the legal requirements for charter schools as established in C.R.S. 22-30.5- 101/209, as well as applicable policies and regulations established by the Colorado State Board of Education and the Jefferson County School District. In May of 2005, the school received a five-year extension of its charter from the Jefferson County School District.

The school's curriculum is based on the Montessori methodology and philosophy, which was created over one hundred years ago in Europe by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman medical doctor in Italy. The philosophy adheres to the education of the whole child: academically, physically, emotionally, and socially, through the use of hands-on manipulatives. The concept is to encourage students to become independent, self-motivated learners who closely interact with other people and their environment.
